Share Waldon Telecom makes way for community garden

National Volunteer’s Week may now be over for another year, but at M Group Services our volunteering efforts carry on throughout the year. We are shining a spotlight on Waldon Telecom, a part of M Group Services’ Telecom Division.

Becky Garvey, Junior Acquisition Project Manager, shares her experience: “The MBNL Notice To Quit Acquisition team at Waldon Telecom has members in both the Diseworth and West Byfleet offices, and colleagues who work remotely, so having the chance to meet up, spend the day together and do some good for the community was an opportunity not to be missed. We contacted the South Derbyshire Volunteer Force and offered our services, mildly apprehensive of what would come back. We were told about a project at St George and St Mary’s Church, just a short drive from the Diseworth office that sounded perfect.

“The Church has been part of the community since the 1100s, and recently secured National Lottery funding to establish a community garden. They have big plans for accessible planting areas, raised beds, shared harvests and community cooking evenings, as well as space for local schools and youth groups to spend time outside studying local wildlife.

“The initial phase was to do the groundworks and clear the site ready for the landscaping team, so we cast aside our spreadsheets and headed for Church Gresley to get our hands dirty, with another couple of members from the Diseworth EE Build team joining us to boost numbers. We met the Reverend Dr Mike Firbank and Adrian Moore from South Derbyshire CVS and after a quick briefing we got started. There was a large area of waste ground to be cleared before the landscapers could move in for the next phase, and the spoils of this clearance were put to good use building bug hotels and wildlife habitats for the local primary school children to study.”

Following the volunteering day, Becky’s looking forward to seeing the next phase of the project take shape. “A big thank you to M Group Services for giving us the time to take on this project, and to the rest of the team for their hard work.

“If you’ve not yet signed up, please do so. It was a really enjoyable way to spend a day and it’s great to know we’ve been able to contribute to something the community can enjoy.”

Adrian Moore, Volunteer Force Development Officer at South Derbyshire CVS, said: “I would like to extend a massive thank you for arranging and supporting this project, and to your amazing team of volunteers who showed determination throughout, demonstrated amazing teamwork, proving volunteers can really make a massive difference.”

As part of the Telecom Division’s commitment to building an attractive Employee Value Proposition, we introduced a Charity Donation and Volunteering Policy as another step towards building “a high performance and values led culture where we do things the right way.”
